Euro pares early gains after U.S. stocks retreat

Although the single currency moved narrowly in Asia, euro rose sharply in Europe on short-covering after triggering stops above previous day’s high of 1.2010 and surged to as high as 1.2074 in NY morning as early rally in U.S. stocks boosted risk appetite. Euro was also supported as Reuters reported that China’s export data for May surged and Asian stock markets jumped after the news with China’s Shanghai Composite rising sharply by 2.8%. The single currency, however, retreated sharply from said 1.2074 high and ended the day at 1.1980 as DJI erased all of its early gains (more than 100 points) and closed the day down by 40.73 points at 9899.25.   
  
Versus the Japanese yen, the greenback moved sideways in Asian and early European sessions inside the range of 91.25-91.62. Although the dollar rose to an intra-day of 91.67 in NY morning, the pair retreated swiftly from there and fell to 91.06 as DJI turned into the negative territory and prompted investors to buy yen.  
  
In other news, the Fed said in its Beige Book that U.S. economic activity improved nationwide last month but worries over Europe’s debt crisis dented confidence. Many districts described pace of growth as modest and the labour market conditions improved slightly as permanent employment levels edged up in most districts. However, Fed said commercial and industrial lending remained weak in most districts.   
  
In addition, Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke said U.S. has ‘a little more breathing space’ on fiscal front because of its size and importance. He also said Fed will ‘absolutely’ respond if banks fail to adjust compensation practices. Bernanke indicated U.S. economy would grow by 3.5%-4% next year and U.S. dollar would still be the dominant reserve currency and U.S. treasuries remain very attractive.   
  
Despite the British pound’s initial sideways movement in Asia, cable rose sharply and reached 1.4608 in NY morning on dollar’s broad-based weakness. Cable then retreated from there in tandem with euro and ended the day at 1.4528.   
  
The nzd/usd pair rose from 0.6670 to 0.6715 after the Reserve Bank of New Zealand lifted official cash rate to 2.75% from 2.50% as expected. The central bank also said that further rate hikes would depend on economic and market developments. The pair then traded with a firm undertone as the central bank hinted that rate-hike cycle would be restarted.  
  
Economic data to be released on Thursday include: Japan Domestic CGPI, GDP, Germany CPI, U.K. BOE rate decision, EU ECB rate decision, U.S. Jobless claims, Canada Trade balance, U.S. Fed budget.

So if it’s OK for rich people to vote their own economic best interest, why do Republicans always say a poor or middle class person voting their own economic best interest is engaging in class warfare?

Every comment I see on Yahoo answers about the current Democratic candidates for President always end up with the uninfromed statement that they are going to rais e everyones taxes. This isn’t true. Every proposal will only raise taxes on the wealthiest 1%. So why would poor people vote Republican if it willl result in more budget deficits that lead to higher inflation, as well as a cut in programs for the poor.
John: I don’t see your point. Some rich people vote Democrat because they see that a more prosperous middle class is good for the economy. Rich people who vote Republican only do so out of selfish interests.

Ace: That’s why Republicans support free trade agreements that gut our manufacturing base resulting in a drop of median wages? Is that good for America?
Ace: That’s because people who lost a $20 an hour manufacturing job had to take a $7 an hour service job, no change in the employment stats, but we have seen a drop in median incomes. If you take income away from the people most likely to spend it, you hurt the consumer economy.
Well Beau, unlike you I actually went to college and I’ve taken several economics classes, so I think my opinions matter more than whatever crap you remember and repeat from Forbes magazine. Stop lying about a tax hike that never happened. The Democrats don’t have enough votes to pass a healthcare bill for children, how could they pass a tax hike? Since you lied your opinion is now worthless. Go away.

These are stock exchanges where the exchange of stocks takes place between the buyers and the sellers. In effect these are the actual stock markets but the term stock market is used in a broader term to signify the overall stock holdings, indices, exchanges and everything else related to stocks.

New York Stock Exchange started in 1792 and is located at the epitome of the US financial icon street called the Wall Street. It is undoubtedly one of the largest exchanges in the country. All the companies aspire to be listed here so there shares can be traded on this exchange but before a company can be listed here they have to complete certain set of criteria in terms of financial strength as well as the industry they operate in.

As a beginner you may think that you can trade in the NYSE, you cannot, so you will either have to be a broker or a route your buy or sell order through a broker. Now if you want to be a broker on the NYSE, you will need to cough a million dollars to become a broker on NYSE or as they say buy seat at the NYSE. These brokers can then take your orders regarding selling or buying a stock.

Similar to NYSE is American stock exchange which is again in the financial district of the country called New York. The American exchange has stocks for trading but also has options for trading. The AMEX can trade smaller companies than traded in NYSE and hence it is attractive to a lot of companies.

NASDAQ is the baby of them all though not in terms of the sheer size of companies listed on it and the full form of NASDAQ is National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotations. It began in 1971 and has almost any company you could think of listed there. Historically though it was known for technology companies like Microsoft and Intel and a lot of new technology start ups like to list here. This exchange does not have a physical building and it works a computer network where buyers and sellers meet through computer software and sell or buy stocks.

If you are international investor there are stock exchanges apart from America in other countries which you will keep hearing like the Bombay Stock Exchange, Hong Kong Stock Exchange or Hang Seng, Luxembourg stock Exchange or even the FTSE.
